The Hamburger Man

The Hamburger Man is a famous 1950s urban legend from Hutchinson, Kansas. Lore says a disfigured former farmer or butcher lives in the local sand hills near Sand Hills State Park, hunting hikers or travelers with a meat hook to grind into hamburger meat. The Legend and Lore The Origin: Stories began circulating in the 1950s following rumors of missing hikers around "Hamburger Hill" just outside Hutchinson. The Description: He is described as a half-ghost, half-monster wearing a hooded or filthy disguise to hide a face horribly scarred or burned in a fire. The Trap: Some variations of the tale claim he lures unsuspecting victims by holding out a platter or offering them a fresh hamburger. Real-World Connections: Local historians note the myth might loosely tie back to a real historical resident, Eugene McInturff (or McEwen), who operated a popular local hamburger cart around First and Main in Hutchinson decades prior.
